It’s easy to feel lost in this big, noisy world. Sometimes, it feels like God is so far away that He might as well not even exist. But don’t worry – you’re not alone. Every Christian has felt lost at some point in their life. And that’s okay.
First of all, let me tell you what it means to be lost. When we feel lost, we lose sight of God and His direction for our lives.
Sometimes it feels like life is just happening around us without much input from us. Or maybe life has become so complicated that we can’t see the “light at the end of the tunnel.”
Maybe you feel lost because a loved one passed away, and now your life feels empty.
Or maybe you don’t have a close relationship with God – or even if you do, it has become stale. It’s easy to lose sight of God when we’re surrounded by other things that are more interesting or pleasurable.
In this blog post, we’ll explore some tips on how to find God when you feel lost.
What to do when you feel lost?
It’s a question many ask when they find themselves in a spiritual wilderness.
I spent four years in such a predicament. I had all the blessings in life, but I felt empty. I tried going clubbing to find fulfillment. I fell into a period of depression and loneliness. That was the darkest time in my life – but it’s also when God found me.
I started reading His Word, went back to church, and invited Him into my heart again. And He brought light into my darkness! I know what it feels like to be spiritually lost. But you don’t have to stay there.
Here are some tips on how to find God when you feel lost:
Find the “pause” button in your life
When you’re feeling lost, it’s easy to get caught up with what everyone else is doing – particularly if they seem happy and fulfilled.
The truth is, you don’t have to see how the world lives in order to find God. You can stop and be still for a while – inviting Him into your life during this quiet time.
Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! Psalm 46:10
Just as the prodigal son found himself lost in a foreign country, it’s okay to be alone with God when you’re feeling lost. If your heart is in the right place, He will give you direction.
Just being in His presence can bring light into your darkness, just like it did for me. I felt so peaceful that time when I “paused” my life to be with Him. It made me realize how much I loved God and wanted a closer relationship with Him – and that’s when I got my “second chance” at life.
Get back on track by reading God’s Word
When you feel lost, it’s as if you’ve wandered away from the map and don’t know how to get back where you once belonged.
That’s why it’s important to commit the Word of God into your heart, so you can find your way back.
I encourage you to spend time in His presence every day – maybe even before starting your day. Let Him inspire you and guide your steps today.
Attend church regularly
When I was spiritually lost, it felt like I didn’t belong in church. But the truth is, we don’t have to be perfect before God lets us into His house. When we feel lost, that’s often a time when we need Him the most – and that’s when He meets with us in church.
We can gather together as a family of believers and worship God in song and in prayer. That’s how we strengthen our faith, develop deeper relationships with others, and find the direction God wants for us.
Commit your life to Him
When I had my spiritual wilderness, I felt so lost that it was scary. But the only way out is through – and what helped me get back on track with God was repentance. I asked for His forgiveness because of all the sins in my life. And then He cleansed me!
He wants you to turn your life over to Him because He loves you. He’s not going to punish you for the mistakes you’ve made in the past – but when we repent and commit our lives to Him, He can make us into new people!
Pray every day
Spend time with God through prayer, so you can receive direction, strength, and motivation to follow His path for your life.
If you want to develop a deeper relationship with God, set aside some time each day when you can talk to Him. Pray in the morning when you wake up, during lunchtime at work, or before bed at night.
When we pray daily, it’s like talking to our best friend.
“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7
See, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me (Isaiah 49:16)
Don’t lose heart
When I was spiritually lost, it got discouraging because I felt so alone. But the truth is, God wants to be your forever friend – and He never loses sight of you, even when you go astray.
He’s cheering for you to turn back toward Him; waiting patiently for you to come home again. Don’t give up on your faith, because He believes in you!
Reach out to others who are lost spiritually
Sometimes our friends aren’t the best people to help us find the right path for our lives – they may not have your best interests at heart or want what’s best for you.
But you can find support through other believers who will encourage you and help you get back on track with God.
For example, if someone in your family or a group of friends are lost spiritually, keep praying for them every day. Even when I was wandering away from God, my family members continued to pray for me! And look at what happened – He answered our prayers by bringing us back together and making us closer than ever.
Why it’s important to connect with God?
“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:6 (NIV)
God is the only one who can give you what you need and make your life fulfilling. He knows best. Trust Him and follow His way:
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5 (NKJV)
Acknowledge God’s Presence
Biblically, David says that God’s presence is the source of our joy. Psalm 16:11 says, “You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (New King James Version)
God wants your heart and mind to be totally focused on Him. He wants you to have a meaningful life–that’s why He sent Jesus to die for your sins.
God is the source of our joy. It doesn’t matter how you feel on the outside, as long as you acknowledge His presence and let Him fill your emptiness with Himself. God is waiting for us, wanting more than anything to fill those empty spaces deep within our hearts and souls.
Final Word
Remember, you can always run back to God. Even when we make mistakes and stray away from Him, the Bible says that He will welcome us back–no matter how far gone we are.
We all go astray at times; don’t be embarrassed by your past! God loves you more than you’ll ever know. His arms are always open and He wants you to come back into His family. As long as you acknowledge Him in your life, He will guide and protect you.
God is just a prayer away–and you can return to Him whenever you feel lost.
