What is Success?
The world’s view of success often looks something like this:
- You have to be wealthy.
- You have to be popular.
- You have to have a lot of things.
- You Have achieved your goals.
- You have to be happy all the time.
But is that really what success looks like? Is that what God considers to be successful? Let’s take a look at some biblical truths about success.
Biblical Truths About Success
1. True success comes from God – Psalm 127:1-2 says,
“Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows; for so He gives His beloved sleep.”
Our culture tells us that in order to be successful, we have to work hard. We have to put in long hours and make lots of sacrifices. But this verse tells us that unless God is involved, our efforts are all in vain.
2. We are not to compare ourselves to others – 2 Corinthians 10:12 says,
“Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.”
When we compare ourselves to others, we are not looking at the whole picture. We don’t know what God has called them to do or what their gifts and talents are. We only see a small part of their lives and we compare it to our own.
3. Success is not defined by our circumstances – Philippians 4:11-13 says,
“I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
Our circumstances do not define us. We are not defined by our bank account, our job, our house, or our car. We are defined by Christ and He is enough.
4. We are to focus on eternity – Matthew 6:19-21 says,
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
This verse tells us not to focus on the things of this world, but on eternity. Our treasures should be in heaven, not on earth.
5. True success comes from obedience to God – 1 Samuel 15:22-23 says,
“But Samuel replied: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.”
Obeying God is more important than anything else. It is more important than our own desires, our plans, and our goals. When we obey God, He will bless us.
These are just a few biblical truths about success. True success comes from God, not from our own efforts. We are not to compare ourselves to others, and our circumstances do not define us. We are to focus on eternity, and we should obey God rather than our own desires. These are the things that truly matter in life.
What Does Success Look Like?
The world’s view of success is often very different from God’s view. The world says that success is measured by our possessions, our achievements, and our status. But God says that success is measured by our faithfulness, our obedience, and our character.
So what does success look like?
Success looks like a life lived for God. It looks like Obedience to His Word. It looks like a service to others. It looks like humility and self-control. It looks like a life that is not defined by our possessions or our achievements, but by our relationship with God.
Success is not easy. The world tells us that we have to work hard and sacrifice a lot in order to be successful. But the Bible tells us that true success comes from God. When we seek Him first, He will bless us and use us to achieve His purposes.
